Doug Unwin, B.Sc., MBA,
Douglas Cove Capital Corp.
Doug is a serial entrepreneur! He first left the corporate world in 1987 and moved from Calgary to Sechelt to open a consulting firm focused on the then rising tide of aquaculture. Doug also founded an oyster farm and was VP of a Venture Capital fund during the late 80's. As the tide moved north Doug came south, back home to Vancouver and founded CTI Computer Telephony Integrators Inc. He operated this business for eight years and when the internet bubble burst and telecom spending ground down, it was time to exit. In 2001 Doug was fortunate to discover the Westlink Technology Commercialization Management Internship program. Over the next two years he was immersed in the disciplines required to take a research idea and create a company. What Doug discovered during this period was the immense need for a way to enable small investors to participate in these private companies.
To meet this need, Doug formed the Douglas Cove Capital Corp. The company has developed a fund of Private Equity Funds that creates opportunities for small investors to invest in private companies. The Douglas Cove fund will invest in venture capital funds in technology companies. This structure provides a way for small investors to pool their capital and invest in venture capital funds that would otherwise require a $100,000 or even $500,000 minimum investment by each individual. Douglas Cove funds also provide a high degree of diversification, thereby reducing investment risk. In addition, venture capital funds provide a return that is 5% to 9% higher than is available in the stock market!
